What is the Pilsen Housing Cooperative?
The Pilsen Housing Cooperative (PIHCO) was started in 2017 by Latino artists and families in Pilsen who wanted to secure their place in the neighborhood amidst skyrocketing rents and displacement. After 2+ years of organizing and planning, and with no government or philanthropic support, we purchased our first property in 2020, a six-unit building near the National Museum of Mexican Art in Harrison Park.
In February 2022 we acquired our second property– six more units! We are now under contract for our third building. We are mostly working-class immigrant families and Latinx artists with deep connections to Pilsen. We are the first organized home ownership initiative in our neighborhood in over 20 years; our project makes home ownership possible for Pilsen residents who would not otherwise be able to own. We have no permanent staff-- we are community and Member-powered.
We have strong budgets and invest in our buildings. Our model permanently removes properties from the speculative real estate market and preserves them in perpetuity as community-owned affordable housing. Through PIHCO, our owner families secure affordable homes for themselves and their families; earn equity and build wealth; collectively invest in and strengthen community; secure a springboard for economic mobility; build leadership skills and increase democratic participation in civic life; and take a pragmatic stand against the economic forces displacing us from our longtime neighborhood.
